Why Computers Count From 1970

The Unix epoch (January 1, 1970) was a pragmatic choice made by Bell Labs engineers in the early 1970s — a round date close to the creation of Unix. Earlier systems used 1900 or 1901. The 32-bit signed integer representation of Unix time (ranging from −2,147,483,648 to +2,147,483,647) allowed representing dates from 1901 to 2038 — more than enough to solve the immediate problem. 64-bit timestamps extend the range to hundreds of billions of years.

Systems that store Unix timestamps as 32-bit signed integers will overflow on January 19, 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC — exactly when the maximum 32-bit value (2,147,483,647) is reached. The timestamp wraps to a large negative number, which most systems interpret as 1901. This affects embedded systems, old databases, and legacy C code. Modern systems use 64-bit integers (which last until ~292 billion AD) — but billions of 32-bit IoT devices and industrial systems remain at risk.

Seconds vs Milliseconds vs Microseconds
