Laminate vs Engineered Wood vs Vinyl Plank

Laminate flooring (AC3–AC5 rated) is the most budget-friendly option. It is scratch-resistant, easy to maintain, and available in virtually any wood pattern. It cannot be refinished and is not suitable for very wet areas. Engineered wood has a real hardwood veneer — it looks and feels like solid wood, can be refinished, and handles moderate humidity better than solid wood. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is 100% waterproof, making it the best choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. It is also the softest underfoot of the three. For Indian climates with high humidity, LVP or engineered wood are often the best choices over laminate.

Understanding AC Ratings for Laminate

Laminate planks carry an AC (Abrasion Class) rating from AC1 to AC5. AC1–AC2 are for light residential use (bedrooms). AC3 is the minimum recommended for living rooms and general residential use. AC4 is for heavy residential or light commercial use (home offices, rental properties). AC5 is for commercial spaces with very high foot traffic. Do not under-spec: an AC2 laminate in a hallway or living room will show wear within 2–3 years.

Straight vs Diagonal vs Herringbone: Planning the Pattern

The layout pattern dramatically affects how much material you need. A straight offset (brick) layout wastes the least (10%). A 45° diagonal layout requires 15% extra because every plank at a wall edge needs an angled cut, and the offcuts are mostly unusable. A herringbone pattern needs 20% extra because planks are cut at precise angles with very short offcuts. Before committing to a pattern, check your room's square footage — a herringbone layout in a 1,000 sq ft area means buying 200 sq ft of extra material.

Underlayment: Do Not Skip It

Underlayment is a thin foam, cork, or combination pad installed beneath the flooring. It serves three functions: soundproofing (reduces impact noise between floors), moisture barrier (critical for concrete subfloors), and smoothing minor subfloor irregularities. Many modern laminate and LVP planks include a pre-attached underlayment. If yours does not, budget an additional 10–15% on top of the flooring cost. Do not double-layer underlayment — too much cushion causes locking joints to flex and fail.

Flooring Terms Explained

  • Click-lock (floating): Planks snap together and float over the subfloor — no glue or nails.
  • Glue-down: Planks are bonded to the subfloor — more stable but harder to replace.
  • Expansion gap: A 10–15mm gap left at all walls to allow the floor to expand in heat.
  • T-Molding: A trim strip used at doorways where two floors meet at the same height.
  • Reducer strip: Used at the transition between a higher and lower floor surface.

Installation Checklist

  • Acclimatize the planks for 48 hours in the room before installation.
  • Check subfloor levelness — variations above 3mm per 1.8m must be corrected.
  • Plan the layout direction — typically parallel to the longest wall or the main light source.
  • Never install flooring under kitchen appliances — they should sit on the subfloor to allow removal.
  • Leave expansion gaps at every wall, door frame, and fixed object.

Can I install laminate flooring over existing tiles?

Yes, laminate can be floated over existing tiles as long as the surface is level and the height increase (typically 8–12mm) is acceptable for door clearance and transition strips between rooms.
