How Zeller's Congruence Works

Christian Zeller published this formula in 1882. The key insight is that calendar months don't align evenly with weeks, but certain mathematical adjustments — particularly the ⌊13(m+1)/5⌋ term — compensate for the irregular month lengths. The formula uses integer division (floor) throughout, which makes it implementable with simple arithmetic. January and February are treated as months 13 and 14 of the previous year to simplify the leap-year adjustment at year boundaries.

The Gregorian vs Julian Calendar Switch
